Unlike acute sinusitis, which is often caused by an infection, chronic sinusitis can be triggered by various factors, including allergies or environmental irritants. It may also occur when the nasal passages are blocked due to structural issues, such as a deviated septum or nasal polyps.
Recurrent acute sinusitis occurs when a person experiences four or more episodes of acute sinusitis within a year, but the symptoms clear up in between infections. Each episode typically lasts no longer than four weeks, but they can be frequent and debilitating.
Common Symptoms of Sinusitis
The symptoms of sinusitis can vary depending on the severity and duration of the condition. Common symptoms of acute sinusitis include:
- Nasal congestion or blockage
- Thick, discolored nasal drainage
- Pain, pressure, or fullness around the eyes, face, or forehead
- A long-lasting cold or flu-like symptoms that don't improve within 10 days
- Symptoms that initially improve and then worsen again
If you have chronic sinusitis, the symptoms may last for at least 12 weeks, and you may experience:
- Chronic nasal congestion or blockage
- Facial pain or pressure, especially around the eyes and forehead
- Thick nasal drainage that is often discolored
- A reduced sense of smell
Chronic sinusitis can cause additional symptoms like fatigue, bad breath, and coughing, especially at night. Some people may also develop nasal polyps. These are non-cancerous growths in the nasal passages or sinuses. Polyps can cause blockages and worsen symptoms.
